Rev. Noir's Battle Against Fate Is the Dark JRPG Hook I’ve Been Waiting For

Divine mandates versus human free will make Rev. Noir’s tragic story a must-watch RPG in 2027.

  • Primary Subject: Rev. Noir (State of Play Reveal / 2027 Pre-Launch)
  • Key Update: I argue that Rev. Noir’s central conflict between divine mandate and human free will during an apocalyptic "Lightfall" season makes its narrative one of 2027's most compelling RPG stories.
  • Status: Confirmed

  • Quick Answer: Scheduled for a 2027 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Rev. Noir is Konami's action RPG following Asch and Finé battling the deadly Lightfall.

There are plenty of RPGs that are coming out this year that I'm excited for - Final Fantasy Resonance and Eternal Anima being some of them. However, the story I'm most intrigued by has to be Rev. Noir's.

Rev. Noir was first revealed during the February State of Play, but it flew under my radar. However, when they touched on it again during the September State of Play, I was surprised by how interesting the story was.

It's a high-stakes narrative that feels both refreshing and tragic. And I'm here for it.

Rev. Noir's Story Is One of The Few That Has Me Interested

For those who don't know what Rev. Noir is about, let me break it down for you. The story pits predestined "astral ordinances" against human free will under the threat of a fatal Lightfall season. Lightfall is a deadly, recurring apocalyptic phenomenon from the heavens that brings instant death to anything and everything it touches.

The concept of Lightfall already makes you feel the game will have a dark, looming energy. One that will have you feeling like the choices you make are life-or-death - and I am absolutely here for it. This isn't just a typical hero's journey. Asch, Finé, and Diana will race against an environmental clock to prevent catastrophe. I love when a game has you feeling like every step is make-or-break. Adding consequences makes the gaming feel more intentional.

What has me the most intrigued, however, is the game's central theme: divine providence versus free will. From what we know of the story, we'll definitely be put into a moral crisis. Asch embarks on his journey because his astral ordinance tells him to "save many people," which makes me think: is this really his choice, or just something he is doing because it's a pre-programmed mandate?

On the game's website, we're told that "Beyond Justice, Annihilation Awaits." It looks like we're getting a story where things aren't so black-and-white, and I'm hype for it. The fact that the crew is unaware of the fate that awaits them already gives me goosebumps, and I'm certain we'll be in for an emotional journey.

Rev. Noir is scheduled to release sometime in 2027. If the game manages to live up to expectations, I don't doubt it will be one of the most memorable RPG games of the year.
