Now that the honeymoon phase of Resident Evil Requiem is over, Capcom has plenty more material to work on the future of their series. With Resident Evil: Requiem selling over 6 million copies since launch, it is now the fastest-selling Resident Evil entry in the franchise, and a promise of additional content coming soon is already making fans giddy with anticipation.
So what’s next for the Resident Evil series after Requiem? We have our theories and speculations. (Note that there are heavy spoilers in this article.)
Aftermath of Elpis

After the canon ending of Resident Evil Requiem’s main story, Elpis is freed thanks to Grace and Leon. Considered as Ozwell Spencer’s Hail Mary for the world, Elpis is a retroviral agent capable of reverting any infected back to its default state. We have already seen some of its effects when Zeno injected himself with it, causing his Wesker-like powers to disappear and turning him human again. The same also applies to Leon, as it cured his debilitating Raccoon City virus.
With Elpis in play, the world of Resident Evil will never be the same. The threat of Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s) is no longer as overwhelming, since Elpis can effectively stop the spread of a new infected strain before it spirals out of control. In a universe like Resident Evil, the existence of a panacea, a so-called cure-all, can also create chaos and destabilize the same shadowy megacorporations that profit from Umbrella’s legacy and its offshoots.

By the end of Requiem, while it is not explicitly stated, it is strongly implied that the good guys, Chris Redfield and the Wolves, have already secured Elpis. This explains why Emily returned to normal and how Grace was able to live on with her newfound family. With Chris in possession of Elpis, it is essentially a nuclear deterrent against bioterrorism, capable of ending threats before they even begin. It is a promising development, but it could also introduce new problems for the cast, especially with the Connections still operating in the shadows.
The Connections "Connections"

One of the most mysterious enemies in the Resident Evil universe, this secret cabal of villains has been operating behind the scenes in almost every entry, even during the Raccoon City incident. After the fall of Umbrella, the organization continued working in the shadows and played a key role in bringing Ethan Winters into the timeline.
The Connections have not yet appeared in full form in the series, but some prominent members have been introduced. These include Brandon Bailey, a protege of Dr. James Marcus, one of Umbrella’s founders. Other members include Zeno and Ada Wong herself, although to be fair, she is not fully aligned with them, given her role as a triple agent.

The Connections have yet to make their big move in the Resident Evil universe, and future entries in the series, potentially Resident Evil 10, could explore that storyline. The possibility of seeing Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine return to stop this “root of all evil” for good feels like a fitting send-off for the franchise in its tenth mainline entry.
Or better yet, it may become part of Requiem’s upcoming story expansion.
Resident Evil Requiem’s Story DLC

Requiem’s story may be over, but that doesn’t mean the Resident Evil story is. We already got a brief tease of the series’ future in a post-credits scene, where Umbrella forces, presumably working for the Connections, retrieve “something” from ARK, which was destroyed after Leon took down Victor. No one knows what they are trying to recover, but fan theories suggest it could be a strain of Elpis found inside Zeno’s decapitated head. Morbid, yes, but it could be the key for Resident Evil’s Illuminati-like group to gain control over Elpis, essentially fighting fire with fire.
The story DLC could focus on Leon Kennedy as he cleans up what’s left of ARK, tracking down the missing object taken by the Connections. Others also speculate that Chris Redfield might be playable, especially since he was largely absent from the game aside from leading his band of special operations soldiers.

Fan theories have also gone off the rails, with some hoping to see Ada Wong appear in the DLC. Given her complicated history with Leon as his estranged love interest, this could be the moment she finally shows up in the modern timeline, potentially revealing what she looks like now and where her true allegiance lies.
Grace as a Series Mainstay

Grace Ashcroft’s addition to the Resident Evil universe was a welcome surprise. While we’ve talked about Leon being the stronger protagonist, Grace serves as the foundation of Requiem’s survival horror roots, and without her, it wouldn’t be as terrifying. The possibility of seeing her return in another entry is not out of the question, and given Requiem’s strong sales, Grace could very well be back for one more run.
We’ve already seen a character return for a second outing, like Ethan Winters in Resident Evil 7 and Village. Grace Ashcroft would not be the first to lead a duology, and as Ozwell Spencer’s last living legacy, she might be the key to stopping the Connections.
Other Things the Resident Evil Series Could Do

Now that Capcom has learned that blending survival horror with action works, future entries in the series could follow the same formula, offering an equal mix of terrifying sequences and the more over-the-top, thrill-ride moments seen in Leon Kennedy’s segments.
Apart from maintaining the same horror action hybrid, the upcoming remakes are also reportedly in the works. While much of it is still rooted in rumors, a Code Veronica remake is widely speculated, and if the reported release schedule proves accurate, we could see Claire and Chris Redfield’s Rockfort Island adventure brought to life in a modern light.
Capcom is clearly not giving up on Resident Evil anytime soon. For a series that has had a turbulent run since 1996, it has finally found its footing again. Thanks to its blend of terrifying horror and campy action, it has reached a new audience, cementing its place as one of Capcom’s best-selling franchises alongside Monster Hunter and Street Fighter.
We don’t really know what’s next for the franchise, but we have a good idea of the possibilities it could explore.
