It looks like Arthur Morgan still has plenty of fans in 2025. A recent financial report by Take-Two revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold 4 million copies since February 2025.
In comparison, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a major AAA title released that same month, sold just 3 million units in the same period.
It’s a curious case, considering Red Dead Redemption 2 is a single-player game from 2018. Yet seven years later, it's still selling like hot cakes, which shows Rockstar knows exactly what it’s doing. Who knows? Maybe a 60fps patch for console players or a Nintendo Switch 2 port is on the way. All Take-Two and Rockstar might need to do is put a $40 price tag on an upgrade, and fans would likely jump on it.
Both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows are AAA open-world games, making the comparison fair. While Shadows may not have received the same critical acclaim as a Rockstar release, it still told a compelling story about the first Black samurai, Yasuke, and the Assassin recruit Naoe in 16th-century Feudal Japan. Still, Arthur Morgan outselling Ubisoft’s latest flagship title by a million copies is a strong sign that gamers are still hungry for more Red Dead Redemption.
The latest Take-Two earnings report also gave a look at the company’s future. With Grand Theft Auto 6 targeting a release date of May 26 next year, the spotlight is clearly shifting. A transcript from an investor call by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick even mentioned that Red Dead Redemption 2’s success prompted Rockstar to develop Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2020. The fiscal report also discussed Mafia: The Old Country, which marks a major change for the series by replacing open-world mechanics with a linear level design.
For now, Take-Two and Rockstar are celebrating the continued success of Red Dead Redemption 2, even seven years after its original launch. Whether they will return to the western frontier remains uncertain, but for now, the focus is clearly on Grand Theft Auto 6. Only after that might Rockstar consider riding into the sunset once again with a third Red Dead entry.
