After initially being announced for a 2025 release window, Grand Theft Auto 6 has officially been delayed. The game will now be coming out in mid-2026, so fans are in for another long wait. Some fans saw this coming, but it’s still disappointing to have the delay confirmed.

On an X post, Rockstar Games confirmed that GTA 6 will be delayed to May 26, 2026. The company apologized to fans for this date being later than expected, especially since it was announced with a 2025 release window. Rockstar said working on this new entry has been a humbling experience thus far, as they try to outdo their previous games.

This isn’t the first time Rockstar has announced a major delay for their anticipated games. Red Dead Redemption 2 was delayed numerous times before it eventually came out on console and PC. Even now, the game doesn’t have a 60 FPS patch for current systems, but most fans will agree that waiting for this open-world title was worth it.

We’ve also seen the consequences of Rockstar Games rushing their releases. Everyone remembers how bad the GTA Trilogy was when it originally released, looking and playing worse than the PS2 originals. Hilariously, the trilogy only became good last year, and that took a lot of extra work from Rockstar.

It will be interesting to see what the overall reception to Grand Theft Auto 6 will be when it comes to consoles next year. There are rumors that this is going to be the first standard $100 game, which looks more plausible now that Nintendo is pushing $80 Switch 2 releases.

GTA 6 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series consoles on May 26, 2026. There’s still no word on a PC or Switch 2 release window.
