  • Quick Answer: PlayStation canceled its deal for Hideo Kojima's single-player action-espionage title PHYSINT, allowing rival Xbox to pick up publishing rights and expand its partnership with Kojima Productions.

It was recently revealed that PlayStation pulled the plug on the action-espionage title, PHYSINT, in mid-June, forcing Kojima Productions to find a new partner in the form of Xbox.

Back in January 2024, PlayStation and Hideo Kojima announced their partnership for PHYSINT. This wasn't the first time Kojima and PlayStation had joined forces, having previously collaborated on Death Stranding in 2019 and again in 2025 for the sequel.

However, it would now appear that PlayStation has potentially severed its ties with Kojima. And honestly? Doing so is a big mistake.

Letting Go of PHYSINT Is a Major Mistake on PlayStation's Part

When Kojima first announced PHYSINT, expectations were high. Not just because it's another Kojima title, but because it was described as the culmination of his 40-year legacy in game development.

Learning that PlayStation unexpectedly canceled the game in mid-June and basically forced Kojima Productions to find a new partner must have felt like the ultimate betrayal for Kojima.

Especially when we consider the fact that Kojima helped bring PlayStation to where it is today with Metal Gear Solid. Pushing him aside when he had planned to give them his definite masterpiece - as a console exclusive, mind you - is insulting, to say the least.

Having Xbox swoop in and save the day proved that they are willing to support visionary, single-player games. They handed PlayStation a high-profile defeat, and it's amplified by the fact people are already upset that PlayStation is prioritizing live-service games. Seeing Kojima forge a broader multimedia partnership with Xbox makes PlayStation look like the loser on this occasion. They literally handed their biggest rival the spiritual successor to the genre Kojima defined on the old-school PlayStation.

When will PlayStation stop rubbing up its community the wrong way? First, they decide to stop producing physical discs starting in 2028; then they chase live-service games over narrative-heavy, single-player games. They already feel so disconnected from their player base, and letting go of PHYSINT proves it. Many on PlayStation were excited for this stealth action experience, and it genuinely feels like Sony is doing everything they can to push away the enthusiasts who championed them all these years.

PlayStation was once known as THE console for masterpiece games, but letting go of PHYSINT undermines that legacy. If PlayStation continues on this path, Sony shouldn't be surprised if people walk out the door with Kojima and drop their PS5 for the Xbox Series X/S.
