  • Quick Answer: Hideo Kojima's next game, Physint, has moved from PlayStation to Xbox for publishing.

PlayStation Studios and Sony have decided to end their partnership with Kojima Productions and will no longer be publishing the upcoming Physint. The title is set to be a return to Metal Gear Solid-like tactical espionage gameplay by Hideo Kojima. The legendary game director later confirmed the studio will now be partnering with Xbox to help bring the project to life.

The partnership was originally announced back in January 2024, with Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst making the announcement. Kojima described Physint “as the culmination of his work” after almost 40 years in game development.

Via social media, PlayStation revealed that the company had decided to step away from the project, with Kojima being a bit more blunt about it, outright stating that Sony had abruptly canceled the Physint project in mid-June, and that Xbox had stepped in to continue to help him bring his vision to life.

As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.

Xbox also confirmed the partnership will extend beyond publishing the game, as the goal is to craft a multimedia working relationship that extends to film and television.

Sony and Kojima had previously worked together on Death Stranding, which was released in 2019 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Kojima Productions would later acquire full ownership of the IP and release the sequel on PC as well as PS5, with Sony retaining console exclusivity as the game’s publisher.

Whatever may have happened between both parties, it seems like it led to an abrupt decision that didn’t leave Kojima happy, although that’s mere speculation.
