  • Quick Answer: To comply with safety laws, Sony will require age verification to access PS5/PS4 communication features; games and the PlayStation Store remain accessible without it.

PlayStation is taking extra steps to ensure gaming remains a safe and fun space for the younger generation.

Recently, platforms like Discord and Roblox released improved age verification measures and parental controls. Now, PlayStation is following suit and will be requiring players to verify their age in order to access certain features.

Here's everything you need to know about the changes.

PlayStation to Require Age Verification for Certain Features

Sony Interactive Entertainment is beginning to roll out new age-verification requirements for PlayStation console owners to continue using communication features.

This was implemented to provide “safe, age-appropriate experiences for players and families while respecting their privacy” and introduce “meaningful control over their gaming experiences.”

The age verification requirement is beginning to roll out across the UK and Ireland, with full implementation aiming to be in place by June.

It means players will need to verify their age if they want to continue messaging and using voice comms on their consoles. If players choose not to verify their age, they can still play games, visit the store, and check their achievements. However, the communication features will be locked.

How to Verify Your Age For PlayStation

Once the verification process is fully up and running, you will be prompted to verify your age after powering up your console. The process can be done via the PlayStation website (Chrome, Safari, or Edge) or app.

To verify your age, you can either provide your mobile number, do a facial scan, or submit an acceptable form of ID.
