  • Status: Confirmed

  • Quick Answer: Roblox is launching Roblox Kids (ages 5-8) and Roblox Select (9-15) accounts in June to provide age-appropriate content filtering and enhanced parental monitoring tools.

In a move to strengthen the safety of their young user base, Roblox is rolling out new age-based accounts and expanded parental controls.

The update will be based on the users' age, with parents able to closely monitor what their kids are doing on Roblox. This comes after increasing concerns over how safe Roblox is for kids, as they are actively exposed to potential grooming and inappropriate content. The changes are expected to roll out in early June.

Here's everything about the situation.

Roblox Announces Age-Based Accounts

Roblox is introducing two new types of accounts on the platform: Roblox Kids for users aged 5 to 8, and Roblox Select for users aged 9 to 15.

These accounts will be age-checked through an age-check system or verified by their parent. The accounts' designs will have a distinct background and visual treatment to set them apart. Both Kids and Select accounts have parental controls, giving them visibility into their child's account.

Roblox Kids account will be able to access games with a Minimal or Mild content maturity label. All communications will be disabled.

Roblox Select accounts will be able to access games with content maturity labels up to Moderate and have passed their three-step selection process. Depending on your region, the Chat may be available with safeguards.

If the user is 16 or 17 years old, they will have a regular Roblox account, which has access to all rated content except for games rated 18+. They will have access to Chat, but this depends on the region.

If a child turns 9, they will automatically be transitioned into a Roblox Select account. When a user turns 16, they will be transitioned to the standard Roblox account.

Roblox Introduces Expanded Parental Controls

As mentioned, parents will be able to access a Parental Control suite. This allows parents to manage content ratings, communications settings, and screen-time and spending limits. The suite also lets parents know who their friends are and what games they are playing.

For users 15 and below, parents can block and approve access to specific games. They will also be able to manage direct chat settings.

With these changes, Roblox hopes to be a safe and healthy platform for users of all ages.
