The Switch 2 is going to be Nintendo’s most powerful console thus far, and this company knows it. We’ve seen how the last Nintendo Direct was quick to discuss its 4K and 60 FPS capabilities. This is going to be a huge upgrade from its predecessor, especially with games like Cyberpunk 2077 at launch.
All that power is nice, but the Nintendo Switch 2 could really use more color to stand out. Fans like this system's sleek look, but it doesn’t feel very “Nintendo.” If there’s one thing this system should have taken from its predecessor, it’s having options at launch.
What are the Nintendo Switch 2 color variants at launch?
Nintendo’s Switch 2 will launch in only one color variant: black with red and blue accents on the Joy-Cons.
Rumors have suggested that this console will have swappable Joy-Con panels, but that hasn’t been confirmed. It seems like Nintendo’s new system will only launch with one variant, and that’s pretty shocking. The company has previously offered two or three variants at launch for some systems, with more colors released later.
Nintendo may release more colored variants later this year, most likely during the holiday season. Hopefully, some of the system’s accessories will add some color to this new console because the sleek black look with colored Joy-Con accents looks boring.
Did the Switch have multiple color variants at launch?
Yes. The original Switch launched with two models: one with red and blue Joy-Cons, and another with grey Joy-Cons.
Later on, other Switch models would be released with plenty of color variants. The Switch Lite launched with Yellow, Grey, and Turquoise Blue. While the Switch OLED prominently featured the black and white Joy-Con model, it still had the previous red and blue, or grey, options. Not to forget some of the special game-specific editions, like that golden Hyrule Switch Lite.
It’s a shame that Switch 2 won't have color variants at launch because that would make the system stand out from other PC handhelds. With the Steam Deck and ROG Ally focusing on sleek or cool colors, Nintendo could have done something different with more vibrant versions. A version with GameCube or SNES colors would have been appreciated.
Will we get more Switch 2 colors?
Knowing Nintendo, they will make more colored variants if this system sells well.
Since the original Switch is Nintendo’s best-selling console, we think this new version will do pretty well. Fans in Japan are already struggling to pre-order the system, with Kirby creator Masahiro Sakurai having to use a lottery to win one. Needless to say, this system will probably sell well and get more color variants.
If Nintendo ever decides to release a Switch 2 Lite, that will probably get more colored variants. After all, it’s a dedicated handheld system, so fans would appreciate having more colors to choose from. Only time will tell if the Switch 2 actually gets a Lite version, but it would be great for handheld-only players.
