  • Quick Answer: Nintendo is not adding a global trophy system, but a datamine reveals an unreleased, NES Remix-style challenge framework coming to select NSO retro titles.

Dataminers have allegedly found proof that Nintendo is launching its own achievements system.

While Xbox and PlayStation have maintained their achievement and trophy systems for years, Nintendo has never implemented a similar system for its consoles. People didn't expect that to change - until now, after images started circulating and stirring the rumors.

Here's everything we know about the situation.

Is Nintendo Getting an Achievements and Trophy System?

While unconfirmed, dataminers have posted images of what appears to be an achievements system coming to Nintendo Switch Online.

Multiple cards featuring characters from a game, arranged in a grid. Each card displays different designs and texts in various languages, with images of monkey-like creatures and other elements. The background is green, and the cards vary in design but are mostly focused on animated characters.

Dataminer Luigiblood has discovered that the NES, SNES, and Game Boy Nintendo Classics games on NSO appear to have in-game challenges and achievements. These are currently not available on the games themselves, leaving many to wonder if they will be announced in the upcoming Nintendo Direct.

Rumors state that not all games will have this trophy system and will be specifically for the retro games. Additionally, the Switch Online Home Menu will allegedly be used to easily access the trophies you've already won. These trophies will supposedly come in the form of collectible, digital cards.

If true, this will go against what Bill Trinen (Nintendo vice president of player and product experience) told Polygon back in April. When asked whether they'd create their own system-wide achievements mechanic, he simply said, "Nope."
