The My Nintendo Gold Points reward system will soon be discontinued, making future digital Switch and Switch 2 games more expensive. Given how much goodwill they have with fans for their next console, it's a shocking move for the company to make. We don’t know if the company has plans to replace this with another rewards system, but things look pretty dire.
On the official Nintendo website, the company confirmed that this acclaimed rewards system will be discontinued on March 24, 2025. Physical and digital games released after March 24 will no longer give fans these points. Furthermore, fans who still have these points after March 24 will only have a year to use them before they become useless.
It is disappointing that Nintendo Gold Points have been removed. Fans could use them to get small discounts on digital games. Trying to get a meaningful discount with these points would require buying many games, so fans would be lucky to get a $5 discount. But $5 was enough to pull the trigger sometimes, so we understand why fans are disappointed in the news.
Fans were ecstatic when it was announced that the Switch 2 would keep the same Nintendo accounts as the first Switch. Players can transfer their digital games to their new system, adding some life to this new console. Unfortunately, digital and physical games will be more expensive now, as everyone is losing their Nintendo Gold Points.
Before the My Nintendo branding, the company asked fans to register for Club Nintendo. This program allows fans to earn points to buy games or exclusive physical goodies like notebooks or 3DS cartridge cases. It will be interesting to see if My Nintendo is slowly phased out for something else.
