The massive Monster Hunter Wilds Title Update 2 leak basically confirmed the existence of Layered Weapons, the most requested feature in Wilds since launch. Aside from Lagiacrus and the return of a fan-favorite monster, it looks like hunters will finally be able to customize their weapons to fit their fashion sense.

What Are Layered Weapons?

Layered Weapons are essentially transmog. They allow players to change the visual appearance of their weapons without affecting the stats of the equipped weapon.

This feature has been a staple in the series and was introduced in the modern Monster Hunter titles, most notably in World’s expansion, Iceborne.

It’s the perfect addition for players who want their hunters to look good while slaying monsters, letting them combine their favorite armors with weapon designs that match their aesthetic.

Layered Weapons also help solve the Artian Weapon problem. Many players dislike Artian gear, not because it’s the most powerful version of a weapon in-game, but because it looks completely out of place with the game’s ancient and primal vibe. With Layered Weapons, players can finally forge Artian gear without being stuck with its over-the-top, Xenoblade-like appearance. They can just apply their favorite skin on top and move on.

Will Layered Weapons Fix Monster Hunter Wilds’ Bigger Problems?

Unfortunately, no. Monster Hunter Wilds’ issues run much deeper than cosmetics.

The streamlined grind and lowered difficulty have dulled the game’s challenge and hurt opportunities for experimentation. More and more players have been dropping off lately, and the game’s player count has seen a significant decline. On top of that, Steam is flooded with negative reviews calling out the game’s poor optimization and performance.

Capcom needs to provide more meaningful content, not just one or two monsters per Title Update. As a pseudo-live-service game, players are expecting regular and substantial updates, not the current trickle of content.

When Are Layered Weapons Arriving in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Layered Weapons are set to arrive on June 30, alongside the massive Title Update 2 that includes the return of the fan-favorite Lagiacrus.

Lagi arrives this June 30.

More challenges are also expected, as Capcom plans to introduce monsters that are more resistant to wounding and have larger health pools, like the recently added Arch-Tempered Rey Dau and the upcoming Arch-Tempered Uth Duna.

Monster Hunter Wilds still has a long road ahead if it wants to recover from its ‘Overwhelmingly Negative’ Steam reviews. But with new features like Layered Weapons in Title Update 2, Capcom may finally be giving players a small reason to come back.
