MindsEye will go down as this year’s biggest blunder, and it looks like the developers are going to pay for the publisher’s actions. Build A Rocket Boy, the game’s developer, will be laying off a number of its employees after the title failed to make an impact. With the game proving to be a huge failure, critically and financially, will it ever get a chance to improve?
The devs confirmed to IGN that a painful layoff process has begun. New roles are being assigned, with claims that these decisions aren’t being made lightly. Based on how the game has been received, this news isn’t surprising, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Interestingly, despite the failure of MindsEye, the devs at Build A Rocket Boy are still planning to support the game. Even though this is a single-player title with some custom modes that gamers can tinker with, the devs are planning to add more content. In the statement below, the devs said they will continue to update MindsEye to make it play better.
“The launch of MindsEye has been a significant milestone for Build A Rocket Boy, but we know that we still have a lot more to do to grow our community in the coming years,” a statement from Build A Rocket Boy reads.
“The challenges we’ve faced have only strengthened our resolve and, while we are deeply saddened by today’s decision and thankful to our incredible team, this shift allows us to focus on delivering ongoing updates and performance optimization for MindsEye, while also ensuring the long-term success of Build A Rocket Boy’s future ambitions.”
Choosing to keep this game going is interesting, to say the least, given how bad its reputation is right now. Those who played it claimed this was another dull game that tries to be cinematic, with performance issues on current-gen consoles and other various bugs. While it’s somewhat admirable to keep supporting the game, I do wonder if there’s any point in keeping it going.
Due to the potential it has, there are fans hoping that MindsEye can pull itself together and then become a good game. No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 were able to pull these impossible feats off, so never say never. However, with the game lacking major fan support and interesting gameplay, only time will tell if Build A Rocket Boy stays true to their word.
Then again, is there any reason to keep this game going? We’ll see.
