The year started strong with the success of Marvel Rivals, but fans know that Marvel Games has some other titles in the works.
It’s unclear what game could come out next, but the holiday season could deliver the long-awaited Black Panther/Captain America game from none other than Uncharted’s Amy Hennig.
Marvel 1943 could be released this Christmas
During a recent showcase for the Unreal Engine at the Game Developers Conference (via Video Games Chronicle), the game’s Black Panther actor Khary Payton confirmed that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra aims to come out later in the year. He says, “We’re still working. We’re planning on 2025… We’re thinking like a Christmas situation, but I’m so excited.”
The game was announced in 2021, and enough time has passed for a realistic release this holiday season; however, no gameplay has been featured for the game at all.
Sure, there’s a very cinematic story trailer, but nobody knows what the actual game will look like yet. With a Christmas release expected, fans are crossing their fingers that Skydance New Media will be able to showcase something soon.
What Do We Know about the Game So Far?
Besides the fact that Captain America and Black Panther will be clashing in the game, it has been confirmed that there will be two other playable characters in Rise of Hydra—one of them being Howling Commando member Gabriel Jones, and another a Wakandan spy named Nanali.
Each character is expected to have a different playstyle, with each of their narratives being part of one big connected plot. Hennig did have this to say about the game previously:
“Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle… They are non-interventionist, but events transpire that pull them into the conflict. They have to protect their interests. The world is getting smaller. No satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can shoot down planes that maybe want to fly over Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?”
There isn’t a mention yet of who could be running Hydra, but we may see the Red Skull again. Maybe even another version of Arnim Zola. Is there even room there for a Baron Zemo appearance?
Back to the Old Narrative
Marvel Rivals may be a hit for now, but the game isn’t as narratively-driven as several hit titles like God of War and The Last of Us. Rise of Hydra has a chance to deliver that through a AAA medium.
After the bomb that was Marvel’s Avengers, Marvel Games still has to redeem itself in the single-player action-adventure genre.
No official release date has been set for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, but the game is expected to launch in the holiday of 2025.
