The licensed Spider-Man 2, Web of Shadows, and Ultimate Spider-Man are clear standouts. But let’s be real — none had the level of production and polish Marvel’s Spider-Man brought to the table.
Even if you boot up the original PS4 version nowadays (which has the added bonus of preserving the original Peter Parker design), you’ll be greeted with a proper AAA rendition of the Big Apple, smooth swinging mechanics that make the otherwise mundane act of traversal an absolute joy, and free-flow combat that nails the speed and agility of Spider-Man.
From the moment the game sets off its story, you know you’re in for a special time. We inhabit a lived-in New York, where superheroes are the norm, and Spider-Man has been a staple of the city’s landscape for roughly five years.
That initial transition from cutscene to gameplay as Warbly Jets’ ‘I’m Alive’ plays in the background still lives rent-free in my head as one of the most explosive, poignant ways of kicking off a game.
Seeing Pete’s down-on-his-luck present, with bills piling up and more coming as soon as he sets out to help take down the criminal mastermind that is Kingpin, is the perfect Spider-Man juxtaposition. It quickly made me realize, yeah, Insomniac gets Spider-Man.
That’s all great, but what seals the deal is, of course, the story: this is quintessential Spider-Man. A timeless tale where Peter’s interests have to be sacrificed for the greater good he can and should be doing as Spider-Man. It understands the nuances of his selflessness without being overtly moral or dramatic. The moments of gravity and urgency feel that much more important because there’s a real connection to every single character. Peter Parker isn’t the only one with an amazing narrative arc, as both major villains have deeply rooted motivations for their actions. I know it’s a relatively old game, but I still wouldn’t want to spoil the many surprises the game hides.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had the unfortunate responsibility of making things bigger and bolder. Truth be told, most of it didn’t land for me in the story department. Everything felt rushed, characters had no room to breathe, and instead of elevating both Peter and Miles, it ended up muting both of their narrative arcs as the game failed to properly juggle both their struggles.
The original experience, however, is beautifully paced, with moments of levity being followed up by bombastic setpieces that raised the stakes. Sure, it’s got your standard open-world fluff, but even acts such as collecting trinkets like Peter’s backpack gave you a bit more insight into this version of the character’s past.
If there’s one game to get you in the Brand New Day mood, I highly suggest you give Marvel’s Spider-Man a spin. Who knows, you might end up enjoying it more than the film itself.
