Before anyone gets confused, this is a serious issue that could cause problems in Marvel Rivals in the long run. Well, kind of.
No, this isn’t a jab at all the blonde women in the world. This is more of a Marvel Rivals design issue than a superficial complaint.
With Season 2 fast approaching, Emma Frost is launching alongside the new map, Krakoa. And yes, everyone’s buzzing about her—both for her striking appearance and her dangerous abilities. She can choke enemies, kick them into bottomless pits, and use telepathy to take control of their minds. These are all great additions, but there’s just one problem: she’s yet another blonde woman.
Marvel Rivals features a diverse roster pulled from Marvel’s massive universe, but NetEase seems to overlook one important thing. This is a fast-paced game where visual clarity matters. Characters need a distinct visual identity. Sure, we’ve got Rocket Raccoon—tiny as he is, he’s unmistakable. Same with Groot, and The Thing. You know who they are at a glance.
But with Sue Storm, Tandy Bowen, and Emma Frost all in the mix? That’s going to be rough on the eyes. Call it a skill issue if you want, but it’s genuinely hard to tell who’s who when they’re all blonde women running around in white suits during chaotic team fights.
Thankfully, Dagger has Cloak by her side, which helps make her easier to identify. But Emma and Sue? That’s where things get messy. In the heat of battle, it’s easy to mix them up. As a Magneto main under pressure, you might throw Meteor M at Emma, a Vanguard, instead of Sue, who’s just chilling in a corner.
If all three are using their default white skins in the same lobby, good luck telling them apart.
The good news is there are alternative skins that help with this. Cloak and Dagger’s Twilight Duo skin makes them stand out. Emma Frost’s X-Revolution suit adds some black-and-white contrast. And Sue Storm’s Malice skin gives her a more distinct appearance.
Sure, it might seem like a small complaint most of the time, but Marvel Rivals could really benefit from more intentional character design in the future. I half expected Emma to have a massive jacket for a more comic accurate look, but left disappointed when I found out she’s not feeling as extra in Rivals.
I swear, if Ultron shows up with blonde hair, it’s over for me. (But I'd love to see it.)
