Marvel Rivals' 18v18 Mode Goes Against Everything the Game Stands For, but I Love It

Marvel Rivals’ anniversary draws near, but the festivities are already kicking off as players get their hands on free 2,500 Units for their cosmetic wants. Apart from that, Gambit has graced the Rivals roster with his hybrid Cajun prowess.

One of the biggest updates to have arrived, however, has welcomed the addition of a whole new game mode: Annihilation.

Annihilation is basically Marvel Rivals’ version of a no-holds-barred deathmatch where anything can happen. Like Doom Match on steroids, it pits 18 players against another team of 18 players, creating an unpredictable cacophony of ultimate sounds and unmitigated chaos.

Taking place in the new map called the Grand Garden, the Annihilation game mode is the place to be if you just want to unwind and go crazy against other players. And the best part? Nobody’s telling you to switch to a healer or a tank.

I'm the only tank.

Speaking of tanking, what’s even more hilarious about Annihilation is that the ratio of Vanguards to Duelists is still unbalanced. That means you’re almost always playing with a solo tank. The rest are playing as Duelists and Strategists, turning their brains off, doing whatever they want.

It’s not a problem, but it’s interesting to see this game mode even making it out of its conceptual phase. There are just too many things to worry about here: server issues, performance dips, and broken team-ups. The backend stuff is quite impressive, and NetEase has proven that an Endgame-like mode is actually possible. I dread for the PlayStation 4 users trying to queue an 18v18 match. Here’s hoping no console explosions happen in the next few days.

NetEase has been experimenting with various game modes since the game’s launch, and they’re great distractions from the horrors of competitive play, especially with its matchmaking woes. Marvel Zombies was largely successful despite its limited run, but NetEase is already confident it can still create more game modes in the future, with even crazier gimmicks.

I enjoyed the 18v18 Annihilation mode. It’s a bizarre addition that adds extra memory space to the full game, but it’s a neat teaser into the game’s future content. It’s only a matter of time before NetEase cooks up an actual story mode for Marvel Rivals before Overwatch 2 does it.

Annihilation goes against everything Marvel Rivals stands for, throwing every semblance of teamwork and strategy out the window, but it’s a damn fun game mode that I can’t put down, even when solo tanking.
