Over the past few days, I’ve been ogling all the new Magic: The Gathering cards. To start, I’m no expert in trading card games, nor am I a collector of rare MTG cards. But I am a huge Final Fantasy fan, and I’m loving everything about what Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix have done with this crossover event.
The cards are simply fantastic. Not only did they bring in incredibly talented artists, but they also included extra bits of lore that were never shown in the original games. In many cases, they even stir our nostalgia by capturing unforgettable moments, beautifully preserved by the artists.

The MTG and Final Fantasy crossover isn’t limited to just one entry from the series. It covers all sixteen mainline titles, and each piece of art ignites a wave of emotions for fans of the franchise. For example, the Final Fantasy X set highlights iconic scenes from Tidus and Yuna’s love story, paired with card descriptions that just make sense. For non-Final Fantasy fans who are into Magic: The Gathering, it might not mean much, but for us Final Fantasy fans, these cards are a gift.
Final Fantasy VI also gets its moment in the spotlight, with cards showcasing the iconic villain Kefka Palazzo, along with stunning depictions of Terra Branford in her Esper form.
As for Final Fantasy VII, both the original and the remake are featured. We see Aerith praying at the Lifespring during the game’s emotional climax, and early scenes in Midgar with Avalanche. Cloud and the rest of the team get their solo moments too, with Cloud swinging his sword, Sephiroth being his menacing self, and others unleashing their signature attacks.
The latest title, Final Fantasy XVI, is here as well. Clive Rosfield’s voice actor, Ben Starr, was even spotted at the crossover’s premiere event wearing a T-shirt featuring his card. The FFXVI cards highlight the Eikons and show Clive striking his signature pose.
This whole crossover has been an incredible celebration of art and lore, and something any Final Fantasy fan can appreciate. Even Yoshitaka Amano, the legendary illustrator behind every Final Fantasy logo, has a card illustrated by him in the set.
Unfortunately, we’ve only seen a few of the new cards, as some are being kept under wraps. However, we won’t have to wait long. The Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering crossover will be available this June 13. For more information on how to get these special cards, check out their website for pre-order details.
It honestly makes me want to jump into the TCG scene. But as someone who isn’t financially ready for that kind of hobby, I’ll have to hold off for now and just stick to playing the games. Either way, these Magic: The Gathering cards are nothing short of amazing, and they’ve brought back so many memories of the iconic moments from the series I grew up loving.
