A new browser-based project is gaining traction across the gaming community, and it’s easy to see why.

Lostgamer.io is a fan-made “GeoGuesser for videogames” that puts an interesting twist on the niche geographic discovery game by taking us into the grand open-worlds of our favorite videogame franchises.

If you feel confident in your knowledge of videogame maps like Elden Ring’s ‘The Lands Between’ or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s ‘Hyrule,’ then you can test out your skills and be the gaming version of Rainbolt here.

It’s actually pretty simple. The browser tool works much like the original GeoGuessr made by Swedish consultant Anton Wallén. The goal is simple: Players need to guess which specific part of the map they are currently situated in. Compared to the actual world map in the GeoGuessr game, players are presented with random images pulled from a wide selection of gaming franchises, such as The Witcher 3’s ‘Velen’ or The Elder Scrolls’ ‘Skyrim.’ They can rotate the map, change camera angles, and move across the other side of the block to get a better view of their area.

Players can customize their videogame GeoGuesser experience by limiting map movement, adding more rounds, or adjusting time limits. They can even mix and match maps from other games in one session.

You can play Lostgamer.io with a friend via multiplayer and work together to find out which part of Grand Theft Auto’s San Andreas map you are in. Alternatively, you can compete with other players and guess the correct part of the map in the shortest time possible. Of course, distance matters, so the more pinpoint accurate your answer is, the better your chances of winning. Top players will see their names etched in the leaderboards.

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises in this browser-based game is its ‘Raids’, where players defeat AI bosses to win prizes. I haven’t gotten around to testing it yet, but it sounds like a novel feature for a GeoGuesser-type game.

Lostgamer.io has a plethora of videogame maps right now. Apart from the other games we mentioned, you can also explore Grand Theft Auto V’s Los Santos, Genshin Impact’s Teyvat, or Red Dead Redemption 2’s America, to name a few.

Compared to other up-and-coming gaming GeoGuessers, Lostgamer’s edge is in its community. Since its creation 2 years ago, it has cultivated a loyal player base of 1,000 users in its official Discord server. Together, they come up with ideas like suggesting which videogame map they add next.

Members can also vote which game deserves the GueGuesser treatment, and the top contenders are CD Projekt Red’s Night City from Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout 4’s Boston. Other possible maps the community is looking forward to seeing are Hollow Knight’s Hallownest, Forza Horizon 5’s Mexico, and, believe it or not, Valorant.

Lostgamer.io is still actively in development, and more content is expected down the line. In the meantime, this interesting twist to the GeoGuesser game is a breath of fresh air that many gamers could play to pass the time.
