Hideki Kamiya’s never one to keep quiet, and the latest Assassin’s Creed Shadows controversy is no different.
In his view, the fuss is just internet noise—loud but far from what most people actually feel.
When Ubisoft revealed that Yasuke, a historical figure of African descent, would be featured as a protagonist in AC Shadows, a small yet vocal group online started to voice their objections.
Accusations of historical inaccuracy, forced diversity, and controversial opinions from figures like Elon Musk fueled the debate. Some went as far as vandalizing Yasuke’s online profiles and framing Ubisoft’s creative choices as a political agenda. Kamiya doesn’t buy into any of that.
His latest post on X highlighted that the backlash comes from what he referred to as a “super-intense minority.” He said these are people who just overreact and nitpick everything.
Meanwhile, the majority, or as he puts it, “normal people,” are quietly enjoying the game. They’re not looking to start arguments or scrutinize every choice; they’re just playing, exploring, and enjoying themselves.
He said this type of outrage isn’t anything new for Assassin’s Creed. It’s almost like every big release attracts those looking to stir up drama. The difference, in this case, is just how visible the noise became.
Kamiya pointed out how the quieter, more level-headed opinions are often drowned out in online spaces. The players who aren’t bothered by it usually stay silent, which lets the most vocal critics control the discussion.
Even with all the backlash before its release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been performing exceptionally well.
Less than 48 hours in, it had already crossed 2 million players, set new Steam records, and shot straight to the top of the UK physical sales charts.
Kamiya mentioned how glad he was to see the team’s effort paying off and the game getting so much love from fans.
So, despite the flood of hot takes on the internet, Kamiya’s stance is refreshingly simple: not every headline, tweet, or thread represents how most players feel.
Most people aren’t losing sleep over Yasuke. They’re just having a good time.
