DC Studios is jumping into gaming, but they dropped this news way earlier than anyone expected.

It's not the first time Fortnite has had superhero crossovers, but Marvel has been the big player every time. While Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman have appeared in Fortnite before, DC hasn't had as much of a presence as its rival. But that's soon going to change.

James Gunn confirmed to ComicBook that Fortnite will soon feature DCU characters in crossovers. When asked directly if collaborations were in the works, he responded, "Yeah, the answer is definitely yes." Peter Safran added that teaming up with Fortnite is just part of a bigger plan to get DC Studios and the gaming world on the same page.

He noted that in the past, there was "historically" very little collaboration when it came to video game crossovers. However, now DC Studios is "talking to Fortnite, [asking] which character we should focus on," with Gunn himself "literally signing off on designs."

Neither Gunn nor Safran specified which DCU characters will be included in Fortnite, but with Superman (2025) hitting theaters on July 11; it's safe to assume that Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and potentially other heroes and villains from the movie will make the cut.

Fortnite collaborations are arriving soon, but those hoping for a full DCU video game will need to wait. Gunn confirmed that the first official DCU game is still "a couple of years" away, meaning it won't be released until at least 2027.

Despite the long wait, DC Studios is beginning to lay out how video games will fit into its broader movie universe. Gunn and Safran shared that they are currently in talks with leading developers such as NetherRealm (Mortal Kombat) and Rocksteady (Batman: Arkham) to keep future DCU games in line with the franchise's grand plan.

Unlike in the past, when DC games were developed separately from the films, all future projects now run through DC Studios' leadership. Safran said this approach helps create a more connected universe where movies, TV shows, and video games all fit together under one vision.

Fans may have to wait a few years for a DCU game, but with Fortnite crossovers coming, DC's footprint in gaming is only going to get bigger.
