Bungie’s Destiny 2 might finally drop old-gen support this year, according to growing speculation within the community. It’s been a long time coming, and fans have long wondered when the game would move on from aging consoles, especially as performance continues to dip below optimal levels.

One major takeaway is that the upcoming expansion, titled The Edge of Fate, might be the moment Bungie officially removes PlayStation 4 and Xbox One from its supported platforms. The reveal event, and a potential announcement regarding this change, aren't expected until May 6. Still, it could signal a major shift for the franchise as Bungie embraces improved graphical fidelity and performance through its Tiger Engine.

Destiny 2 has been available on old-gen platforms since 2017—nearly a decade. With the PlayStation 4 now approaching 12 years old, it’s increasingly difficult for developers to maintain performance and visual quality on outdated hardware. Bungie is no exception.

Players have also pointed out the parallels to the Rise of Iron expansion, which marked the end of support for Destiny 1 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. That expansion moved fully to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016. Now, Edge of Fate may follow a similar path.

Edge of Fate will be Destiny 2’s ninth major expansion, following The Final Shape. While details remain under wraps, players are already theorizing that this chapter will take us beyond the Sol System—possibly freeing our Guardians from the limiting grasp of the Sol System and into truly uncharted territory. Moving the story forward after the Witness’s defeat is a pivotal moment, and one that likely demands technical upgrades to do it justice.

Bungie’s looter-shooter wouldn’t be the first game to phase out old-gen support. Titles like The First Descendant have already started to step away from dated hardware in favor of modern-gen platforms like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

At this point, it’s only a matter of time before Bungie makes it official at next week’s reveal. If the rumors are true, old-gen players should brace for what might be disappointing—but ultimately necessary—news.
