Fans everywhere rejoiced when Pokemon Legends: Z-A announced that they would be bringing back proper trainer customization. This was a huge relief to many, as the feature was stripped to its basics in Scarlet and Violet. This is a feature many fans hold near and dear to them, hence all the excitement.
However, one has to wonder if this is really an essential element to modern entries in the series. Being able to customize your look is great and all, but does that really matter when these games are all about catching and battling?
Keep Your Clothes On

Bringing back this feature for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is not just good, but fitting. Pokemon X & Y were the games that introduced this feature to the franchise, so having its pseudo-sequel bring it back is a positive. This also makes the setting more exciting in general, since the game only takes place in one city.
We imagine that the game’s various clothes shops will update with new options as the game progresses, which is what Legends: Arceus did. Since Legends: Z-A is set in the modern day, this also means that the clothes should be more interesting. Arceus’ classic Japanese-themed attire was good, but there’s something about more modern aesthetics that appeals to younger gamers.
Not Necessary, Still Cool
Most fans will agree that bringing this feature back to Pokemon Legends: Z-A wasn’t needed, but that doesn’t make it any less appealing. There’s a part of us that wonders if customization like this will return in the next mainline game, and being okay if it doesn’t. After all, these games tend to have striking character designs, and messing with them doesn’t always feel right.
On the other hand, not all gamers are alike, and we’re sure some of these designs won’t appeal to everyone. Scarlet and Violet may have made your lead characters look dorky, but they had a big school setting, so the uniforms made sense. We do hope that the feature comes back in the next mainline entry, but we won’t hate it if Game Freak decides to shelve it.
Unless the characters are hideous, of course. Then we will absolutely want this feature back.
More Options Are Good

Even if the trainer customization isn’t a needed feature in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, we just appreciate that it’s there. Players who already like the default looks of these characters can just stick with them and use their money on healing items. Everyone else can spend it on clothes to make their characters look cooler.
We’re interested in seeing what the next mainline Pokemon entry will take from Legends: Z-A. Until then, we’re just glad to see these games have more customization options for players everywhere.
