The wait for GTA 6 has been long, lasting two console generations and making fans wonder if it will ever come out. Luckily, the game got a release date for next May, but most will agree that 13 years is too long a wait. It makes us wonder if the wait would be better if GTA 5’s DLC hadn’t been canceled.

Rockstar Games could have avoided plenty of memes and annoying questions if they hadn’t canceled the GTA 5 DLC expansion that was supposedly being worked on. Fans enjoyed the adventures of Franklin, Michael, and Trevor and wanted more of these three in that rumored story expansion.

Unfortunately, Rockstar Games focused on expanding GTA Online. While fans of this online mode appreciated this, single-player gamers still wanted more from the setting and characters. It doesn’t help that plenty of rumors and interviews with actors teased that something was coming, only for nothing to come out.

Fans of Rockstar were hoping for more single-player DLC because the previous game, GTA 4, had some massive expansions. To this day, fans still speak highly about The Lost & The Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, adding more story to that version of Liberty City. Considering the great work done here, fans wanted to see GTA 5 DLC do the same for this game.

That’s not to say GTA Online is bad, because fans still play that mode to prepare for GTA 6. It won’t be completely the same, but we assume that Rockstar will be building off the success of this game, so playing the online mode will give players some entertainment while waiting. Plus, fans need a realistic online game to play while waiting, especially since Mafia: The Old Country is ditching open-world gameplay.

It’s kind of sad that fans are still playing GTA 5 on current-gen systems while waiting for GTA 6. Fans may have forgotten, but this game was originally on PS3 and Xbox 360, so they’re playing a pretty old game. Granted, the recent remasters have made it prettier and added some QOL improvements, but that’s what all basic re-releases do.

GTA 5

We know things will never be like the sixth generation of games, where franchises got consistent sequels and spin-offs. At the same time, Rockstar seemed to be working on something that could placate fans for a bit, so they chose to cancel it for GTA Online money. They aren’t wrong for doing that, but you’d think they would try to make that DLC, given how much fans have been craving it.

Rockstar Games will never make that GTA 5 DLC, but at least some re-releases, fans can play. They finally released the first Red Dead Redemption on PC, and maybe we’ll get GTA 4 remastered down the line.
