  • Quick Answer: This article details new gameplay features for Grand Theft Auto 6, focusing on seamless character swapping and dynamic mechanics.

The Grand Theft Auto 6 marketing blitz is about to hit full throttle, even if leaks make it seem like it has already begun. A recent interview with Dazed magazine gave fans a glimpse of the ambitious systems Rockstar will implement in the next entry of the long-running series, including seamless character swapping, which will make GTA 5 look ancient by comparison.

Revealing that the game would introduce features such as dynamic body weight mechanics reminiscent of San Andreas, Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative at Rockstar, explained how being able to swap between GTA 6’s two protagonists, Lucia and Jason, will open the door for incredible gameplay opportunities.

“This marks the first time that a GTA game has featured a playable couple in the lead role, which makes for some unique scenarios: on the way to a job, for example, players can cruise along the highway as Jason, or swap to Lucia in the passenger seat to scroll on the in-game phone.”

The idea Humphries is trying to convey is that swapping characters will be much faster and require next to no loading. Sure, you will be able to go on separate adventures using Jason or Lucia, but it’s very likely the main narrative will see you controlling both at various points in the game.

GTA 5 had multiple characters players could swap between freely at any given moment, but loading from one character to the next took quite a bit of time, and there were rarely times when you actively had to use all three, barring a few main story missions.

If the seamlessness Rockstar has promised with GTA 6 is fulfilled, it would be one of the biggest innovations the game could bring to the table—beyond all the fancy graphical bells and whistles you’d come to expect from modern Rockstar.

In any case, all will be revealed when Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on consoles this November 19. Fans will get an early glimpse at gameplay via Netflix this August 27, so don’t miss out on that if you’re interested.
