  • Quick Answer: GTA 6 was initially planned to include North and South America under the codename Project Americas before Rockstar scaled scope back to focus on Vice City.

Recently, Bloomberg released an article detailing Rockstar's development of GTA 6.

Titled "The Making of Grand Theft Auto VI," the article detailed everything from how Rockstar traveled to Miami to ensure realism to the care placed in crafting the NPCs. What they also mentioned was the early stages of developing GTA 6 - and what the game could have had.

Wondering what they originally planned for GTA 6? Let's discuss it.

GTA 6's Original Scope As "Project Americas"

We all know that GTA 6 is now set in Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida. The capital, Vice City, is a fictionalized version of Miami. However, the game was originally planned to be much larger than just one state.

The Bloomberg piece confirmed that GTA 6 was initially code-named "Project Americas" and that they aimed to feature parts of both North and South America. However, they ultimately decided to cut the game down to Miami and its surroundings.

The code name isn't new news. In fact, GTA 6 leaks from 2019 uncovered the code name and claimed that the game would feature Vice City, Liberty City, and a new fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro. However, this is the first time Rockstar itself has acknowledged that it planned to feature more than just Vice City.

While the reason why they decided to just feature Vice City wasn't explicitly stated, it was likely done to ensure the game would actually be completed. After all, Rockstar originally planned to develop GTA 6 alongside Red Dead Redemption 2, but the latter required the studio's full workforce to finish, and main production on the former only started in 2019 after the sequel's launch.

Though the wait was long, players don't have to wait too long now. The game comes out on November 19, which is a little over a month from now. Are you ready to explore the new Vice City?
