GTA 6 is in everyone's minds at the moment, with the game's pre-orders now available and Rockstar slowly but surely starting to reveal more and more details on what the game will offer.
With so much hype and expectation, there is one thing many people are still wondering: how much did it cost to make? The question is very valid considering the game's scale and complexity, so we have to talk about it.
How Much Did GTA 6 Cost to Make?
For starters, we don't have a clear answer to this question... and we probably never will.
The studio is not known for disclosing development budgets for its past games, as we have seen for its most recent game, Red Dead Redemption 2. Players and media have had to run on estimates and reports, but the real number has never been confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company.

Having said that, the budget for Grand Theft Auto 6 is estimated to be above the $1 billion mark. Business Insider is one of the sites behind this, estimating that the game's budget is between $1 billion and $1.5 billion in an interview with Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick posted back in May.
This would mean the game has cost more than other AAA titles, such as Genshin Impact ($998 million as of 2025), Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ($871 million), and Cyberpunk 2077 ($526 million). This budget also surpasses big movies like Jurassic World Dominion ($658.8 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($536 million).
If we go back, the estimated total production cost for GTA 5 was $265 million, which means GTA 6 will cost more than four times that amount. This is nothing too out there, especially since the game is said to have been in full production since 2020, with the pre-production and planning phase happening in the years prior.
On top of the production budget, we also have to consider the marketing budget, which can equate to large amounts, given that Rockstar tends to take a Hollywood movie approach for their marketing.
This means TV ads, billboards, spots in sports events, sponsorships across the board, etc. Just like for a big-budget movie, spending can easily go above $200.
Now add inflation in the mix, and the more than $1 billion budget doesn't seem far off from reality in comparison to the previous entry in the franchise, which was more than 10 years ago.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on Thursday, November 19, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
