Horror games are a lot of fun, especially the thrill that they give you when you play them alone. However, playing horror co-op games with your friends is even more hectic and enjoyable.
One prime example is Lethal Company which was released in October 2023 and became a hit throughout 2024 as it went viral on social media. The game was simple: Travel to different moons, scavenge the area for items, and make a profit for the Company. However, it's not so easily achievable as you encounter so many monsters along the way. The base game's already a lot of fun, but mods add more to the game (all hail the Yippee mod).
Due to the game's success, it spawned many co-op horror games with a similar formula. If you're on a hunt for similar games to Lethal Company, keep on reading!
R.E.P.O
R.E.P.O (The Retrieve, Extract, & Profit Operation) is a game many players can say is similar to Lethal Company. The game's concept is to travel to houses and facilities in a truck with up to 5 other players and collect valuable items to reach the price quota set by the Taxman. However, extraction points have a varying quota that needs to be fulfilled. Around Levels 5-6, roughly 4 extraction points must be activated and completed before you can return to the truck.
Not only that, but collecting and transporting the items isn't the easiest task. In Lethal Company, you must put them in your inventory (except for some items like the axle). In R.E.P.O, you must hold onto the item and deal with physics. One wrong move can make the item hit the wall or floor, lowering the total value of the item.
While that sounds simple enough, you will face more monsters for each level you and your crew complete. Sometimes, they even gang up on you, especially when you're returning to the truck after completing all extraction points.
Content Warning
While Content Warning is not similar to Lethal Company's objective, it brings in the same amount of repeatable fun. In this game, you and 3 other friends will descend to creepy black-and-white places randomized in each run. However, instead of running away from the monsters, you must hunt them down and capture footage with your crew with the video cam. If you're holding onto the camera, there's a limit that you need to be mindful of.
There's a view quota that needs to be reached within several days. You can buy equipment from the store, such as a reporter microphone, a boom microphone (that can lead to you being stuck in places due to how long it is!), and a soundboard that can help boost views and, honestly, have a lot of fun with your friends. The best part is that you will get a CD you can play on the TV in the living room in-game after each run.
Content Warning is currently available on Steam and regularly gets updates and bug fixes.
Murky Divers
If you're looking for a game with a similar feel to Lethal Company and a touch of Subnautica, then Murky Divers might be for you and your friends (however, if you have thalassophobia, skip ahead). The game allows co-op for up to 8 players in total: You may go on a regular sub that can take up to 4 divers or have the full chaotic mode in the large sub that can host 6 to 8 players.
In this horror co-op game, you must retrieve corpses from sunken labs, but you must be careful, as many dangers lurk in the deep sea. Someone would also need to pilot the submarine but must rely on sonar and stations since you can't see where you're going. After surviving, you can buy upgrades and items before your next journey into the unknown!
The Headliners
In this goofy horror game, you play reporters or journalists who risk it all to get the best scoops. You need to roam the abandoned and dangerous streets of New York, and you may search every corner of the buildings to find your next story.
This can be played by up to 8 people. This is like Content Warning, but you must take pictures of destruction and monsters instead of videos. After each run, you can review the photos you've taken, given that you've survived the day.
PILGRIM
Besides R.E.P.O., PILGRIM might be the game most resembling Lethal Company's concept. It is basically a medieval version of the game. You travel in a carriage, which reminds me of Skyrim's opening sequence, and you can enter the house to get loot. You also get five inventory slots instead of only four. The interior of these places is dungeon-like, and some traps are found. The sounds were quite scary and actually made me panic.
The way to revive players is also interesting, as you require chalk and draw in the star symbol. If you have some spare money and are out of Lethal Company-like games, you can try this out with your friends.
Lethal Company and these other games seem repetitive in nature, and they may seem like they can get boring fast. However, they still provide hours of entertainment and fun. Give them a try with your friends since most are good prices!
