Final Fantasy XVI may not have been the huge success Square Enix had hoped for, but the game still has its devoted fans. There are critics who don’t like how it focused on action gameplay, but many were willing to forgive that, thanks to its memorable characters and intriguing story. It might not have done well on Xbox Series, but third time’s the charm with a potential Switch 2 release.
During a livestream of the game (via X user Genki), producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida and creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro discussed the game’s future. Both developers talked about how the game is now on PlayStation and Xbox systems, with Nintendo being the only system left not to have it. While neither party confirmed this was happening, it’s clear this was a tease for something.
A Switch 2 release could do Final Fantasy 16 some favors. Nintendo is the most popular gaming brand right now, so debuting this RPG on their new console would introduce it to a whole different audience. Fans will also know what to expect, now that the game has been out for a few years.
However, it’s also worth noting that third-party games aren’t selling too hot on the Switch 2 right now. Fans want to believe that it’s the lack of “true” physical games, as most third-party titles are cheaping out and using game-key cards. In reality, it seems like the lackluster sales are due to most of these games being fairly old or readily available on the original Switch.
Sadly, it’s more than likely that Final Fantasy 16 will be in a game-key card, unless Square Enix surprises us. The game is often billed as a 150GB juggernaut, due to its detailed visuals and effects. We’d love to see the company pull a Cyberpunk 2077 and fit the whole game in an actual game card, but they put the rather small Bravely Default remaster on a game-key card, so hopes are low.
Even with that, it will be interesting to see if Clive Rosfield’s adventure makes it on Nintendo’s most powerful console to date. Nintendo fans do love them some Final Fantasy, and the whiplash regarding its action-focused gameplay has lessened to an extent. Turn-based RPGs are pretty cool, but there’s always room for an epic action game like FF16.
That’s everything we know about Final Fantasy 16 potentially coming to Nintendo Switch 2 for now.
