  • Quick Answer: Check out a new mod for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth that enhances its graphics by replacing shaders, improving lighting and character models.

The Final Fantasy modding community has perhaps fixed one of the biggest issues of the FFVII Remake series: the lightning.

No doubt the games are pretty, although Square Enix has reached certain limitations by sticking to using Unreal Engine 4 for the entire trilogy. You bypass potential hiccups by avoiding a transition to UE5, but at the end of the day, the studio is working with a less potent engine than those available today.

In any case, a brand-new mod helps Final Fantasy VII Rebirth look even better. Don’t worry, this isn't AI upscaling or something like DLSS 5 that completely removes the artistic vision of its creators. The Shader Injector lets you replace the original shaders with new ones in real time while running the game

The creator of the mod states that it will significantly improve lighting and shading with minimal performance hits. A few of the changes are more subtle, like better ambient lighting. However, the real winners are the character models, which look much improved. Just take a look at the comparison below (or the header image).

According to David Matos, the creator of the mod, he gets roughly 15 to 20 less FPS playing on a RTX 3080. He still gets 80-100FPS at 1080 on max settings.

Like I said, Rebirth (or Remake for that matter) isn’t a particularly ugly game. I much prefer that Squared opted to stick with UE4 throughout the trilogy, as it’s clear it’s made development of Rebirth and FFVII Revelation much smoother.

But if you’re a PC player and have a rig capable of running the game and the Shader Injector on top of that, that replay is going to be an absolute treat.

You still have some time, as FFVII Revelation is set to come out in early 2027 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series, and PC.
