Nintendo has unveiled new information for the Switch 2’s highly anticipated Donkey Kong Bananza. As expected, this Nintendo Direct revealed a couple of things fans knew, while also sharing some brand-new information that will surprise gamers. Overall, this looks like it’s going to be another quality hit from Nintendo when it comes out next month.
If you missed out on the Nintendo Direct, or just want a summary of what was shown, we’re here to help. Here’s everything the June 18th Nintendo Direct revealed about the Switch 2’s Donkey Kong Bananza.
The leak was true
After some key art for Donkey Kong Bananza was leaked too early, the Nintendo Direct confirms that this rock creature we’ve been seeing is actually Pauline from Super Mario Odyssey. She’s much younger here, so it looks like the rumors of this being a prequel to Odyssey are very much true. Looks like the lore of this universe just got more interesting.
Don’t mess with DK
Even though this is only his second 3D game, Nintendo made sure to give DK some fun abilities. His various attacks, including his punches, rolling, dive punch, and drumming, all have uses in combat and exploration. The drumming seen in Country Returns and Tropical Freeze can act as a sonar that can find hidden items, while his role and dive punches are great for exploring. He can also throw a giant rock and use it for double jumps, showing how creative this game is.
Super Saiyan Donkey Kong
One of the best parts of this Direct is the reveal that Donkey Kong Bananza will let our heroic ape go Super Saiyan like in Dragon Ball Z. Called “Kong Bananza” in-game, this feature lets DK become even stronger, with bananas in his head mimicking the Super Saiyan look Goku and Vegeta have. This will be your best way to go through enemies and destroy parts of the environment.
He can also transform into an Ostrich and Zebra, which have additional skills, but they don’t look as cool as Super Saiyan DK.
Tears of the Kingdom makes an impact
Bananza will have moments where you unlock paths to an underground world, which look a bit similar to a similarly named zone in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Unlike that game, these are more open areas rather than one huge world, but the reference is clear, Plus, this gives players even more collectibles to get.
GameShare with Switch 1
Easily the most exciting feature revealed from the Direct, Donkey Kong Bananza will let players use GameShare to allow for local co-op with a Switch 2 and an original Switch. It’s a great way to play with younger family members or friends who don’t have the new console. Just try to play the mode this year, since an NSO membership will be needed after March 31, 2026.
New Amiibo
Collectors beware, as a new Amiibo figure has been announced to coincide with Donkey Kong Bananza. This will have DK and Pauline together. Using this figure in-game will summon a giant set of DK boulders that can be destroyed for extra rewards. All other Amiibo are also compatible, giving DK a big ball that can be used to clear obstacles.
