  • Quick Answer: Dave Bautista is playing Kratos in Amazon's God of War series after replacing Ryan Hurst, who exited due to a severe injury.

When the God of War TV series was first announced, Ryan Hurst was slated to take on the role of Kratos.

However, he suffered a torn bicep during stunt work while filming the show's first episodes. This prompted Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures to recast the role to prevent a massive production delay. Now, we've finally learned who will be taking over the iconic character.

Here's everything we know of the situation.

Dave Bautista Replaced Ryan Hurst as Kratos in God of War TV Series

On August 20, Variety revealed that Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) will take over the lead role of Kratos in the God of War series.

The role was originally supposed to be helmed by Ryan Hurst. However, Hurst suffered a torn bicep on set in June 2026, requiring him to have surgery. Instead of delaying production into 2027, Amazon and Sony announced they would recast Kratos.

God of War is confirmed to have two seasons right off the bat, with the two shot back-to-back. Filming originally began in February, and reportedly four episodes were shot. With Bautista officially on board with the project, production is expected to resume soon, and all those episodes will be reshot.

The series will revolve around the two most recent God of War titles. We will witness Kratos raise his ten-year-old son Atreus while battling gods of the Norse pantheon. The official logline of the series states, "Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human."

Callum Vinson will take on the role of Atreus. Other cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind) is the showrunner, while Cory Barlog, the director of God of War (2016) and creative director of God of War: Ragnarok, will serve as an executive producer. A release date for the God of War series hasn't been announced at the time of writing.
