This post includes massive spoilers for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. This is your first and final spoiler warning

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been the talk of the town since its release. The indie RPG has gained a large following due to its phenomenal story, gameplay, and characters.

Perhaps one of the best characters isn't even one of the main characters, but rather one on the side. Their death means as much as the death of Gustave, and probably hurts players, as we just lost one of the central characters. As you can already tell, spoilers are bound to be made, so proceed with caution.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has so many notable characters, which makes it stand out among games that may be GOTY candidates. One of the players' favorites (and mine) will definitely be Noco, a Gestral merchant that the team will first encounter in Flying Waters.

Noco

Gestrals are known to be friendly, though many of them show an interest in and love for fighting. Many of them are merchants, with Noco being one of them. He's a bit silly, and the first interaction with him will put a smile on people's faces, showing how funny yet wholesome the conversation between him and Maelle, Lune, and Gustave was.

Though there weren't many scenes featuring Noco, his personality still shines through all of them. Perhaps one of his best scenes is the one where the Expedition first meets Monoco. While this was a fun scene, Noco reminded us how we had already lost Gustave. This created a type of bond with the character, as players share a memory of someone we have grown to love. Not only that, but all the interactions thus far showed how long Noco lived alongside Verso and Monoco.

Monoco holding Noco

Noco had dreams, which he revealed when he expressed that he wanted to tag along with the Expedition to Old Lumiere and become the undisputed top merchant in the world. He bravely came with the team despite the dangers that loomed. This is comparable to how we, as the Expedition, have a goal of defeating the Paintress and ending the Gommage. It's his passion that makes us like him.

This ultimately solidified the players' bond with Noco, the reason why it hurt when he didn't survive Renoir's wrath despite Monoco trying his best to protect him. He's not lost forever and can technically be resurrected as a patate, but it's no longer the Noco we know and love. It's such a painful scene to witness, and it still brings tears to my eyes whenever I see it.
