Capcom has issued a cease-and-desist letter to the developers of Sega vs. Capcom, a free fan-made 2v2 tag fighter that pitted iconic characters like Sonic against Ryu.
I recently covered the project, which served as a genuinely cool alternative in the tag-fighter space—complete with incredible animations, an original soundtrack, fully playable arcade modes, and online play backed by rollback netcode.
The studio behind the game, 4CYDE Studios, released the following statement regarding the immediate shutdown:
“SVC is shut down because of using Capcom's characters and likeness, nothing else. With any fan game, that's the risk and we have no regrets making the game happen. Thanks to everyone involved in the project. Glad we reached a season 1 release. Overall, stay tuned!”
It’s a rather bizarre move for Capcom to issue a takedown against this particular project. Historically, the publisher has been relatively open to fan-made endeavors—even going so far as to license some officially in the past.
