The week seems to have been filled with canceled games like Wonder Woman and closing studios like MultiVersus’ Player First Games.
As it turns out, PlayStation also had a Twisted Metal game reboot in the works, but it was promptly canceled. While no official details have been revealed, a developer's CV has somehow revealed what could have been a return to a classic PlayStation franchise.
Twisted Metal Reboot
A Twisted Metal reboot was said to be in the works at Firesprite Studios back in 2022, but Sony apparently canceled the game last year following some huge company-wide layoffs, which included the axing of The Last of Us multiplayer and the infamous bomb Concord.
According to VGC, the reboot was intended to be a live-service game released alongside the Twisted Metal TV series, which starred Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz. However, the game never met that deadline, and while a second season is coming up this year, it looks like the game won’t be coming out anytime soon.
While Sony never got to go into detail about their revamp of Twisted Metal, a developer’s online CV had been spotted giving details of them working for Firesprite on Project Copper. The dev’s description reads:
“Project Copper was a 3rd person vehicular action combat game, it was based on a classic IP owned by PlayStation developed by Firesprite (PlayStation Studios) it had 3rd person shooter mechanics wrapped with 3rd person vehicle combat with the objective of being the last one standing.”
The CV also posted some blurred images from development. Though Twisted Metal is officially mentioned, it’s the only title that fits based on the classic PS IP, and Firesprite is working on it.
What’s Twisted Metal about?
The Twisted Metal series launched on the PlayStation in 1995 and remained exclusive to that platform until the PlayStation Portable.
The game is essentially a playable demolition derby in which players control these gnarly, fantastical characters as they duke it out in an arena with their specialized murder vehicles. Calypso runs the Twisted Metal tournament and promises to grant the winner any wish.
The game’s enduring mascot is Sweet Tooth, a murderous clown that drives an ice cream truck with a flaming clown head on top of it. In the series, Sweet Tooth is played by Samoa Joe and is voiced by Will Arnett.
Though the series was recently released to decent reviews, the last Twisted Metal game was published in 2012.
It’s unclear if Twisted Metal could come back down the line, but it seems like a lot of work has already been put into its development. With PlayStation doing some recent restructuring, maybe there’s a chance for a reboot to get released, but for now, TM fans will just have to make do with the older games and the TV series.
