Want some beginner tips to enjoy Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced? I’ve got you covered.

If you haven’t seen my review, I absolutely adored the latest installment in Ubisoft’s iconic series. There’s a ton of content, from side activities to a beefy main story to chase. Knowing what to focus on can be a bit daunting — should you power through the main story first? Maybe try some Templar Hunts or Assassin’s Contracts? What about the new Rifts, a fresh activity that wasn’t in the original game?

Fret not. In this guide, I’ll share some neat tips and tricks to make the most of your time with Black Flag Resynced. Let’s begin.

Play the Main Story Until You Unlock All of Edward’s Abilities

It’s easy to get distracted at the mere hint of side content being available to you. But you should really power through the main story until you fully unlock all of Edward’s tools to properly start enjoying the game.

I won’t spoil the exact point I recommend you start playing, but you’ll notice the game makes a point of telling you Kenway’s all kitted up, and you’ll unlock a sort of home base you can start upgrading. Believe me when I tell you, once you get access to things like the rope dart and more guns, you’ll come to enjoy combat more.

Prioritize Upgrading Your Ship

Once you unlock your own little island called Great Inagua to upgrade, you should prioritize the Harbourmaster and upgrading your ship.

A lot of the content in Black Flag Resynced will revolve around naval combat, and getting decent upgrades will make your life sailing the seas a lot easier.

The major upgrades I recommend you focus on are:

  • Armored Hull: Gives your ship more HP.
  • Broadside Cannons: Increase the number of broadside cannons.
  • Heavy Shot: A special close-ranged shot that’s an optional unlock. Highly recommend you get it for burst damage.

Learn The Rhythm of Combat

Black Flag Resynced doesn’t feature a traditional RPG progression system. The abilities you get are yours with no way of improving them beyond very specific things, like the amount of bullets you can carry with you.

That said, knowing how to utilize what you got will avoid some frustrations. Avoid simply mashing the attack button, as it’ll get boring very fast and you’ll have a harder time depleting the enemies’ stun bar. Instead, try parrying and perfect dodging, which will grant you access to immediate takedowns or the ability to dish out big damage, respectively.

The leg sweep is a great way to bypass the entire stun bar and go for an instakill; if you’re near walls or boarding an enemy ship, you can spartan-kick guards off ships or bring them close to you with your rope dart. It’s not the most in-depth combat system, but it’s nonetheless fun.

Don’t Neglect Crafting

You’d be forgiven for quickly forgetting that the game features a small crafting system.

It’s not intrusive, and you can absolutely never interact with it. That being said, if you’re exploring a new location, take some time to hunt the wildlife inhabiting it, as you can collect their pelts to upgrade Edward’s item carrying capacity.

You can carry more smoke bombs, more pistols (the one I recommend you chase first), more sleep darts, and even improve your base health. Again, Resynced is not a proper RPG, but this slight progression system does a very good job at incentivizing exploration.

Turn Off the HUD and Immerse Yourself in the Caribbean

This has nothing to do with gameplay per se, but it’s something I want you to try out. Go to the options menu and completely disable the HUD, hop on the Jackdaw, raise your anchor, and set sail without direction.

Believe me when I tell you, the game’s gorgeous visuals paired with the vastness of the open sea will give you a sense of freedom few open-world games can achieve. You’ll truly come to appreciate the amount of love Ubisoft poured into this remake.

Try Out The New Content As Soon As You Can

Black Flag Resynced is, for the most part, the same game you know and love. That being said, there are a few additions you can enjoy. The biggest one includes new missions, but those are saved for the post-game

You can, however, partake in Rifts and find crewmates for the Jackdaw that were not present in the original game. Resynced completely removes all modern narrative, opting for ‘What If?’ scenarios called Rifts, which you can access relatively early. Just like three new crewmates that you can recruit after rescuing them via side quests.

If you’re a fan of the OG game, check them out and see if Ubisoft nailed the new content.
