- Quick Answer: Why you should tune into the ongoing Summer Games Done Quick charity speedrunning marathon.
I love watching speedruns. I don’t partake in trying to finish a game as fast as I can myself, but I’ve been enjoying Games Done Quick for well over a decade, and I’m here to tell you why you shouldn’t miss out on it too.
Games Done Quick is a gaming speedrun marathon that lasts over a week, raising money for charity in the process. There are two major marathons per year: Awesome Games Done Quick in January and Summer Games Done Quick, which runs from now until July 11.
I’ve been watching the event for well over a decade now, and here are my reasons why you should do it too.
There Is Likely a Game You Like in the Schedule
If you head over to the Games Done Quick website, you can see there are a dozen games being played on a daily basis. Chances are there is a game you’ve played, enjoyed, or were curious to see how speedrunners are able to break.

For me, this year things like Hollow Knight: Silksong, Resident Evil: Requiem, Unbeatable, and a few more are games I want to tune in and watch. It’s always interesting seeing what sort of sequence breaks, exploitable bugs, and other new tricks speedrunners pull off. It’s extra enjoyable at GQD events since each run has very insightful commentary to contextualize things.
Really Fun Gimmick Runs
GQD and speedrunning is not only about finishing a game as fast as you can, and things can get a little hectic at Summer Games Done Quick. If you look at the schedule, you’ll see some information about each run. Believe me when I tell you, there have been quite a few memorable runs throughout the years.
Have you ever seen Shiba Inu complete an NES game in front of thousands of viewers? It’s happened. What about a blindfolded Super Mario 64 randomized run? Believe it or not, it’s happened. One of my favorites, however, was seeing a live band serenade viewers while a content creator showcased a truly incredible Crazy Taxi gameplay.
You really don’t know what to expect each year.
It’s For a Good Cause
Tuning in to a GQD event means you can support a good cause, as each one of its two major events is supporting a specific charity. The January event, Awesome Games Done Quick, supports the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Meanwhile, Summer Games Done Quick helps Doctors Without Borders.
Last year, fans raised over $2 million for the organization. A cool thing about the event is that you can influence certain runs by using the money you donate to vote in polls, enter giveaways for exclusive licensed merch of various games, and more.
It’s a Marathon, So There’s Always Something to Watch
Summer Games Done Quick doesn’t stop at all for an entire week. Have a long night of studying or working ahead? It’s the perfect second-monitor content, as there will be a run going on at all times. There are even recaps in case you missed a hype moment from previous runs throughout the day.
A specific run you want to see is too late at night, or you can’t watch live? The VODs are uploaded almost instantly to their official YouTube channel.
