SEGA Can't Quit Persona 5, and Neither Can I

Even after the release of Persona 3 Reload and Persona 4 Revival coming in a few years, fans are bracing themselves for more Persona 5-related media from Atlus and SEGA. After all, it is the game that made this series more popular than ever, thanks to its stylish UI, fast-paced battles, and a modern story that’s slowly becoming timeless.

But why can’t SEGA get over Persona 5? Well, the company accidentally leaked sales for their older games, and it’s starting to make so much sense. If we were SEGA, we’d do the same thing.

The accidental leak revealed that Persona 5 Royal has sold 7.25 million copies, making it SEGA’s most profitable modern game over these past few years. Based on the list, it has sold more than Persona 3 Reload, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Sonic Frontiers, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Systems aren’t listed here, so it looks like this is accumulating every version of Royal that has been released thus far. Because this version of the game was released as a PS4 exclusive in 2020, before getting a multi-platform release in October 2022, we aren’t too surprised that the acclaimed RPG continues to be a sales juggernaut.

As someone who has bought P5R on the PS4 and Nintendo Switch, I can’t blame anyone for constantly buying this game. Trying it on a console outside of the PS4 was a trip, especially since this was the series’ debut on a handheld. It also runs really well on the Steam Deck, making me wonder if I should also get the game on that system.

Repeat P5R buyers like myself probably enjoy seeing this game on a new platform or something more powerful. The Switch version is essentially that PS4 game on a handheld, but that’s enough since us fans can bring it to cafes and parks. It also received current-gen ports in 2022, so fans with stronger hardware could experience this game in 60 FPS.

The impact of Persona 5 Royal can still be felt. Persona 3 Reload and the upcoming Persona 4 Revival are clearly inspired by this release, as they make up their own stylized menus. Reload also made the dark and holy attacks do regular damage instead of being relegated to random one-hit kills, something we expect to see in P4R. Some fans don’t like how this trilogy might end up blending in together, but newer players who can’t get into older graphics won’t mind these major changes.
