Why Rogue is Marvel Rivals' Most Complex and Best-Designed Hero

Season 5.5 of Marvel Rivals drops this Friday, December 12, bringing the next character into its ever-growing roster. Rogue, one of the most powerful X-Men in Marvel history, is making her debut!

What makes Rogue special in Marvel Rivals isn’t her Vanguard position or her flashy fighting game brawler moveset. It is her ability to steal abilities that makes her one of the game’s most interesting heroes.

Borrowing another ability is a pretty common skill when it comes to hero shooters. Overwatch has already done that with Echo, copying an entire hero’s moveset and stopping them from swapping to another hero for a few minutes. However, in Rivals’ case, Rogue does not transform into a different character. Instead, she just “absorbs” a signature skill and keeping her existing moves with her.

This is a game-changer for Marvel Rivals. We already saw that hybrid heroes exist in the roster, with examples like Mr. Fantastic blurring the lines between Vanguard and Duelist. But Rogue? She’s a completely different beast that will adapt to any composition. You want that third Strategist? Pick Rogue. A third Duelist? Rogue. A second Vanguard so your poor solo-tank isn't tanking all that damage alone? Rogue again.

She will likely shake the meta in future seasons. Her ability to borrow powers from the enemy team is going to piss off a lot of people, especially when against a good player. Imagine doing the most calculated Doctor Strange ultimate, only to be cut short by a Rogue taking Luna’s snowball ability.

The good news here is that Rogue’s kit has a high skill floor. That means not everyone can simply pick her and get MVPs left and right. Like a fighting game character, players need to understand how her cooldowns and meters work. Practicing in training mode is essential to master her kit.

There is also a major caveat to Rogue’s ‘absorption’ abilities. She can only borrow select abilities from other heroes, and not everything. She can’t copy Loki’s clone ability or swim underground like Jeff the Land Shark. But this is already a major step in the right direction for the hero shooter, as Rogue will essentially turn into a wild card hero in every match. A good Rogue player will destabilize the enemy team if they know what or when to steal an ability. Pair it with her ultimate ability that reduces an enemy’s ultimate charge, and she is going to be a formidable pick in high-elo matches.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about Rogue’s potential to shake up Rivals’ meta, but we can already tell that she is a key hero and a deciding factor when it comes to winning matches. Of course, she is a double-edged sword, so a bad Rogue is simply bad, but a good one? Now that's something.
