- Quick Answer: Yes, Marvel Rivals Season 9 allows any character to use Team-Up abilities without needing anchor heroes active on their team via customizable loadouts.
Since its release back in December 2024, Marvel Rivals has certainly shaken the hero shooter genre. Its innovations, such as the team-up mechanic and certain unique hero abilities, have made it ever so popular, even more so than Overwatch in many instances, which has dominated the scene for as long as I can remember.
Recently, NetEase dropped a major announcement regarding the game. The live service hero shooter is set to have its 9th season very soon, and while many expect the usual changes that will help retain its relevancy and fame, no one likely knew just how drastic they would be.
For the next update, the developers stated that things would certainly be different, starting with a noticeable rework on Black Widow and her combat capabilities. While it's nice that the hero is getting the alterations she deserves, it's the news that comes afterwards that will make Marvel Rivals feel like a completely different game.
First off, the team-up mechanic, the unique aspect the game is known for, will be receiving a drastic overhaul. Currently, for a specific hero to gain the benefit of a team-up, which is a new active or passive ability, it is required to have the anchor hero that can provide the buff active on the team.
So, team compositions would usually be determined by which team-ups would be ideal, forcing players to pick characters they may not want to play just to gain the extra edge. However, NetEase will be changing that moving forward with season 9, and the way the developer will do so is to ensure that every character gains the team-up benefit, regardless of whether the anchor hero is available.

Before a match begins, players can choose between two different team-up loadouts, each one granting a unique ability. For example, the Hulk has a choice of getting a new ground slam move if he chooses the one with Captain America, or his attacks become wilder and he becomes more durable if he opts for the one with Wolverine.
Again, regardless of whether the anchor heroes are available or not, in this case, it's Captain America or Wolverine, you still get the benefits. However, if they are on the team, then whatever abilities you gain from the team-up are enhanced, like having a larger area of effect or dealing more overall damage.
This changes how players approach creating team compositions entirely, as there are so many different possibilities. And since there are a lot of different options, there's no telling what kind of meta there will be, as every new hero could either be the best or worst, depending on what loadout they pick and how they synergize with others on the team.
Also, you can switch between team-up loadouts at any point in the match, so long as you're at the spawn point. So, that means you and your team can adapt to what's needed at any point during the game, and so can your enemies. This will make team fights a lot more chaotic and unpredictable, even more so than they already are in Marvel Rivals.
The change to the team-up mechanic is obviously the biggest point of interest in the game's upcoming ninth season, but there's another that has also caught the attention of many. During the announcement, it was also stated that aside from standard health, there will now be regenerative shields.

It will be distinct in your life meter, but it has the same properties as your base health, in that it can be both healed and damaged. However, as its name suggests, it will regenerate. So long as you don't get hit within the next five seconds, the regenerative shield will go back to full at certain rates.
For example, if Captain America lost all 300 of his regenerative shield, he can regain what's lost at a rate of 60 health per second so long as he doesn't get hit within the next five seconds. This is actually a huge change, as diving heroes or extremely aggressive Duelists will now have a way to sustain themselves without having to run back to the team for heals or searching desperately for a health pack.
It promotes individual playstyles, ones where a single person can make risky but highly rewarding plays that could lead to victory or defeat. The regenerative shields also lift the pressure off of Strategists, as they'll be freer to heal whoever's needed rather than mostly focusing on the aggressive teammates that are in a constant state of death.
As someone who has been playing Marvel Rivals since its release, I can easily say that the ninth season will be the most game-changing one. Matches will not feel the same, but whether that's a good thing or not is something we'll all have to wait and see until the update is out. Nevertheless, there's no doubt it's going to be very exciting, and I can't wait to see how much fun, or pain, everyone will experience once these changes take effect.
