Why Is Elden Ring's Most Requested Feature Still Missing 3 Years Later?

Discussions about Elden Ring’s Nintendo Switch 2 port have been controversial at best, mostly due to its poor performance in handheld mode. But that is a different story altogether. Despite selling over 30 million copies since its launch in 2023, FromSoftware has refused to add one of the most requested features: a Boss Rush/Replay mode.

Elden Ring has been out for nearly three years, and its massive expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, launched just a year ago. Since then, fans have been asking for a boss rush mode, especially with the Switch 2 version on the horizon. Many assumed FromSoftware would update the game for all platforms at the same time, but that never happened. Instead, what players received was a poorly optimized port of one of the best games ever made.

Would love to face Placidusax again!

Fans have long wanted a Boss Rush or Replay mode that lets them relive Elden Ring’s unforgettable encounters with its gallery of iconic bosses. From Malenia’s relentless Waterfowl Dance to Prime Consort Radahn’s crushing celestial strikes, players crave the chance to face these superbosses again without having to replay the entire game.

What makes this even stranger is that FromSoftware is not unfamiliar with this kind of feature. While not a full boss rush, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice included a system where players could revisit past boss fights through “Remembrances.” This mechanic worked well with the game’s lore and gave players a satisfying way to relive its most intense moments.

Elden Ring also has “Remembrances,” but they work differently. Instead of letting players re-experience boss battles, they are simply resources acquired after a boss that can be turned into weapons, spells, or runes. Considering how central the idea of remembrance is to the game’s themes, the absence of a true boss replay system feels out of place.

Replay value is at the heart of Elden Ring, yet the ability to replay boss encounters simply isn’t there. This may be an intentional design choice, pushing players to start fresh runs and experiment with new builds. Still, many in the community would do that regardless. A straightforward quality-of-life option to revisit bosses would not take away from that experience.

At this point, it seems unlikely that FromSoftware will ever add a Boss Rush or Boss Replay mode to Elden Ring, especially with Nightreign now filling that gap for players who crave endless monster hunts. Perhaps it is time to accept that in Elden Ring, the only way to face its legendary bosses again is to begin a brand-new journey.
