The Elder Scrolls is a beloved game franchise that brought millions of gamers an irreplaceable journey through its world. There are a lot of players who grew up with The Elder Scrolls, where they can get lost in its world and live as the character they created.

Some of the best Elder Scrolls games are arguably Morrowind, Skyrim, and Oblivion. The last, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, has recently released its Remastered version. This means that there are upgraded graphic designs for aspects such as the character models and the environment itself. However, was it really necessary for Bethesda to make a remaster of Oblivion?

The original game has been around since 2006, which makes it outdated in a lot of aspects. The most obvious is the graphics upgrade, making The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on par with the visuals of today's video games. To be fair, the original's visuals weren't that bad to begin with, but any upgrade is welcome. However, the system requirements can be quite painful as it's hard to run on older systems even on the lowest graphics settings.

Besides graphics, there were also gameplay changes that some players may think of as an upgrade, while some believe that it simplifies Oblivion's previous mechanics. Combat perks were also reworked that give flexibility for players, providing different combat styles. Fatigue also doesn't affect the player's melee damage, and the character's health will regenerate when outside of combat (a huge help for players with skill issues, such as myself).

However, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered still wasn't bug-free, as certain quests still had issues. One of these was the "Go Fish" quest, where the Slaughterfish won't spawn as intended. Some players did suggest that it may need an in-game day reset for the fish to spawn, but this still varies per player. There may be more of these bugs, but so far, everything is playable and enjoyable (except for the FPS drops).

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered wasn't exactly necessary, but it drew in old and new players alike, with the game topping the Steam charts just a few hours after its release. While the original has its charms, the Remastered version attracted new players to the franchise of Oblivion due to its stunning visuals and mechanics that may be more similar to Skyrim.
