Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 reunites the loveable band of misfits, but according to director James Gunn, this sequel is an emotional farewell for the crew.
Speaking to Deadline about his return to the Marvel property, the cult filmmaker discussed what we can expect from the third entry. Within, Gunn hinted at a franchise conclusion for the team.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Will Mark the Last Appearance for the Team
Gunn deems the forthcoming title as "the end" for the Guardians, stating that Vol. 3 will be the final film we see this group of heroes as an ensemble.

The Suicide Squad director implies that the movie will take Peter Quill and co. for a darker and scarier entry compared to past episodes:
Gunn's comments don't specifically state that individual Guardians will cease to pop up, making it possible for Groot and Rocket to appear in other MCU entries. Chris Pratt is reprising his role as Star-Lord in Thor: Love and Thunder, so it's certainly possible.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has begun production and is currently set to release in May 2023.
