As we wait for Crystal Dynamics to release their new version of Tomb Raider, it turns out that there was a remake of Anniversary that was in the works. This is interesting because Anniversary was already a remake of the first game, so remaking a remake is an interesting choice. Still, this game has seemingly been cancelled and we’re still waiting for that new entry.
Infinity Tomb Raider has revealed early assets of the canceled Anniversary remake, showing that some work was done before everything was canned. We see a character model for Lara Croft, some animals that were being made, and unused levels. Aside from Lara, most of these models didn’t finish development, which was probably for the best.
Now that this remake has been canceled, it will be interesting to see what Crystal Dynamics has planned for Tomb Raider. Fans recently got remastered versions of the first six games, divided into two collections. Even the controversial Angel of Darkness was included as one of the remasters, showing how dedicated this team was to making everything accessible.
With the first six games now readily available, fans are hoping that Lara’s Legend trilogy gets a similar re-release. Tomb Raider: Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld were the first HD games of this franchise, introducing a more refined version of that familiar gameplay. It will be interesting to see if we get remasters of those, or if we finally get that new Tomb Raider game.
Fans can currently purchase those remasters of Tomb Raider 1 to 6 on modern systems. They can also pick up the acclaimed Survivor Trilogy on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
