Square Enix has something special in store for one of the most powerful and iconic summons in the entire Final Fantasy franchise, let alone FFVII: Knights of the Round.

During a recent interview with Vice, Director Naoki Hamaguchi shed some light on how the team is handling the game's ultimate summon, confirming that obtaining will be quite the journey within a journey players will set out in FFVII Revelation.

"What I can say is, in Revelation there will be a specific storyline that follows in a similar vein to the Protorelic quest," Hamaguchi revealed. "We are putting a lot of effort into Knights of the Round content within the game. It’s actually going to be quite a pretty good story experience for the players as well."

For fans of the original 1997 classic, the Materia was famously hidden away on Round Island—a secret location tucked into the northeastern corner of the world map that required breeding a Gold Chocobo just to reach.

Once you stepped onto the island, you simply walked inside a cave and picked the red Materia off the floor.

Hamaguchi noted that the dev team knew fans would expect something far more substantial from a modern trilogy:

"The reason why I wanted to do that for Revelation is because the whole Knights of the Round Materia is a fan favorite from players who played the OG FF7. We didn’t want to make it the same exact way as it was in the original game, where ultimately you just go to this random island and just pick up the Materia. If we were to make it as simple as that in Revelation, I felt that the fans would be mad at us, so we wanted to make it a bit more interesting than that."

The scale of this questline might be even bigger than initially planned. Speaking on his Twitch stream on September 11, popular fighting game content creator and Final Fantasy enthusiast Maximilian Dood, who got a chance to try out the current Revelation build, shared additional details regarding the team's ambitions for the quest, pointing out that developers are actively reworking the encounter to make it feel truly special.

"Apparently Knights of the Round didn't meet Endo-san and Hamaguchi-san's expectations," Max stated during his stream. "They wanted [the quest] to be bigger and more challenging. So they were like, 'We completely redid it,' and they're working on it right now. It's in development."

Given how intricate and combat focused the Protorelic quests were to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, turning Knights of the Round into its own narrative arc feels like the best possible move. Making players earn the ultimate summon through a grueling, story-rich challenge honors its legacy far better than just grabbing it off a cave floor.
