There’s a lot of buzz surrounding Resident Evil Requiem right now, especially since a Gamescom showcase was confirmed. Capcom has been on fire with all of their releases lately, so this should be another surefire hit from this company. Because of the company’s momentum, fans don’t mind the rumors that Requiem might have open levels like The Last of Us Part 2 or The Evil Within 2.

Some fans are worried about this potential gameplay change, as the RE series has always shone when it's focused on pure and campy horror. Luckily, everything we’ve seen from this ninth entry has been good thus far, especially since fans can switch between first-person and third-person mode. Open levels don’t always mean open-world, and we’re sure Capcom can make exploration feel horrifying in this new entry.

A Whole New World?

If the rumors of Resident Evil Requiem having open levels are true, it would be a natural evolution for this series. Exploration has been a major part of the franchise since that first game, so being able to expand that with bigger levels makes sense. Having to go through several levels for puzzle pieces while being chased by enemies could add plenty of tension.

Exploration also allows for more resource gathering, which is incredibly important for these Resident Evil games. Scrounging every nook and cranny just to get some ammo in order to survive against enemies sounds like a winning formula to use. If it also leads to more engaging puzzles and set-pieces, that would be a lot better.

Big Levels, Big Chases

We know that Resident Evil Requiem is going to have another big enemy that chases Grace Ashcroft around in that initial area. Once the ruins of Raccoon City become a major part of the game, it would be amazing if that horrific force ends up chasing you in these open levels. Trying to outsmart it or find new places to hide in would be amazing, and makes resource gathering a frightening endeavor.

Having more enemies chasing you in these open levels also adds a layer of tension, since there could be hordes of foes that will want to tear you apart. Trying to outsneak or outwit these scary enemies could make for some of the best gaming moments next year. If true, this could easily outdo any other horror game in the fun and creepy department.

Longing for Long Hours

One complaint or compliment fans have with the Resident Evil series is how short they tend to be. Most of these titles last 10-15 hours, which is solid, with plenty of reasons to replay the story. If Resident Evil Requiem is going for more open levels, we wouldn’t mind if this becomes one of the longer games in this series.

Having a 30-hour game in the franchise would be groundbreaking and could make future replays shorter. If Requiem follows the Resident Evil tradition of having New Game Plus, having a ton of weapons at the start of a playthrough will make succeeding ones even more fun. This should also allow for some speedruns, which are always fun.

Resident Evil Requiem will likely use these rumored open levels very well, as we imagine they will all be fun and serve a gameplay purpose. If this is all aligned with a good story, Capcom fans will be eating this entry for years.
