The Switch 2 is an incredibly powerful console, managing to get 60 FPS out of games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It’s a huge boost from the original Switch, and the fact that games like Street Fighter 6 can run on it is great. Seeing Nintendo compete with PlayStation and Xbox has been eye-opening.

However, while the performance boost of the Switch 2 is great, it still doesn’t matter that much in the long run.

Don’t get us wrong, seeing games like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet run well on this machine is great. Even games that were already good on the regular Switch can look or play better on Nintendo’s new console. Without a doubt, this is going to be a powerhouse handheld for years to come.

But there will come a day when the Switch 2 will show its age. Players will call this system a “potato” after giving fans 60 FPS on Zelda, because newer games will be stuck in 30 FPS. Fans will beg Nintendo for a fancy new system, and they will get it, before eventually becoming outdated.

This might sound negative, but it’s already happening with devices like Valve’s Steam Deck. Once called a “Switch on steroids” by fans, many now lambast it for running Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in 30 FPS. We’re guilty of this as well, and it’s why performance doesn’t matter that much.

Simply put, these devices aren’t bad; technology just keeps evolving.

We can’t blame Nintendo for focusing on power with the Switch 2, as the original Switch was “already outdated” on release. But that didn’t matter because it was a good system with great games. Had it not been for the original Switch, we wouldn’t have gotten the Steam Deck or PS Portal.

Years from now, it will still be viable to get the Switch because it’s home to so many good games. We also imagine that modders will get plenty out of the system when the time comes. Sure, most games will be “stuck” at 30 FPS, but those titles will be quality and playable.

The same thing can be said for Nintendo’s Switch 2. It might be the hot thing right now with unparalleled performance, but that will eventually fade. It happened with the Steam Deck and is already happening to the PS5.

In the end, a quality gaming lineup will trounce performance any time. Even if the Switch is a “potato”, it outsold more powerful systems like the PS4 and Xbox One. The same thing happened with the Wii, outdoing the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Link and the Master Sword

Luckily, Nintendo is already giving the Switch 2 a library of killer games. From Donkey Kong Bananza to Mario Kart World, there’s already a lot to like about this system. The games might be pricey, but we think they’ll age well (and maybe even get cheaper).
