The Street Fighter movie has found its Chun-Li. According to Deadline, Callina Liang has been cast as the iconic Capcom character for the upcoming film which was originally set for a March 2026 release. Due to delays and production changes, it has now been removed from Sony's release calendar.
Liang is a relative newcomer to the film industry, having roles in only two movies before Street Fighter: Bad Genius and Presence, both released in 2024. Now, she'll step into the shoes of the famous Interpol agent in undeniably her most important role to date.
Details of the Street Fighter adaptation have been scarce. Directing duo Danny & Michael Philippou, famous in the fighting game community for their Real Life Street Fighter viral video, which has garnered almost 9 million views on YouTube, stepped down from the project, with Kitao Sakurai now at the helm.
Other casting rumors suggest the likes of Jason Momoa and WWE Superstar Roman Reigns could join the project. Although their potential roles in the film remain unknown.
Liang being the first actress with a role suggests that Chun-Li could be one of the leads in the Street Fighter film. It would make sense considering her backstory in the first games, as she joins Interpol to chase down the evil organization known as Shadaloo, led by M. Bison, as she seeks revenge for her father's murder.
Of course, the likes of Ryu and Ken are poised to make an appearance. Capcom is overseeing and co-producing this project alongside Legendary Pictures, so expect them to be more faithful than the 90s adaptation. Granted, it has gained a cult following, but it's so detached from the source material that it bears basically no resemblance to the original Street Fighter story.
