- Quick Answer: Blizzard has announced a surprising new direction for the StarCraft franchise: an open-world shooter set to release in 2030.
Blizzard is turning StarCraft, the beloved RTS game, into an open-world shooter. After days of teasing an upcoming announcement, with many believing it to be a third entry in the mainline series, the studio shocked fans at BlizzCon 2026 by confirming the long-rumored pivot.
The bad news? It will not release until 2030 at the earliest.

Simply titled StarCraft, the project is being helmed by former Far Cry 5 director Dan Hay, who was previously working on a survival game at Blizzard.
No gameplay footage was shown, but a rather spectacular CGI trailer got everyone at the venue and those tuning in online fairly excited. The teaser followed a squad of recruits dropping into a chaotic combat zone overwhelmed by Zerg forces, highlighting a recruit named Holt whose weapon jams right before his armor is brutally breached. It’s nice to see Blizzard’s craftsmanship in animated teasers on full display.
It’s got the hallmarks of peak Blizzard animation, check it out below:
This marks Blizzard's third attempt at a spin-off shooter for the IP, following the infamous cancellations of StarCraft: Ghost and Project Ares. It’ll likely be some time before we get more news regarding this new StarCraft project, but they certainly got my attention.
