Let’s be honest here: no one was expecting major God of War announcements from San Diego Comic Con. And yet, they dropped two massive ones: the release date of God of War: Laufey (February 16, 2027) and news directly from the mouth of Sony Santa Monica’s overlord, Cory Barlog, that the next entry in the franchise will feature Kratos and will tie directly to Laufey.
The timing of both announcements is extremely sus. As I said, SDCC is a big event, but it’s never been the epicenter for major gaming news. Especially from one of PlayStation's tentpole IPs. You save that for a Summer Game Fest or a State of Play, simple as that. So, why was it announced at a Comic-Con panel?
Of course, this is something the company will never admit, but damage control is likely the big reason. There’s nothing wrong with having a panel to showcase the voice talent and go a bit more in-depth into the development of a game, but dropping major news without as much social media fanfare to hype it up beforehand just screams of desperation.
Sony is facing a ton of warranted backlash in recent weeks over its decision to completely stop all production of physical video games by 2028. Even if statistics prove they are justified in doing so, removing that decision so unilaterally is, as I said, rightfully making fans angry, bombarding each and every one of their social media posts with criticism for the decision.
Look past that, and there’s the Laufey situation itself. A select few in the fanbase are angry that Kratos is being sidelined after years of waiting for a new God of War. It’s been four years since we last saw the God-slaying, blood-thirsty demigod turned loving father, and it’s likely fans will have to wait a bunch more for the upcoming GoW confirmed by Barlog. But hey, at least you know it’s real, right?
Honestly, as much as I hate to see games being in the crossfire of hordes of people angry at what Sony is trying to pull off, their resorting to throwing announcements left and right means the pressure is getting to the company, and sooner or later they’ll have to address the major elephant in the room.
